What Is a Reheat Unit?

Here’s the problem it solves: to remove humidity from air, you have to cool that air down further than the room actually needs. Left as is, that overcooled air would blow into your building colder than anyone wants — uncomfortable for employees, customers, or patients.

A reheat unit takes that overcooled, dehumidified air and warms it back up to a comfortable temperature before it ever reaches the space. The moisture stays out. Excess chill doesn’t come in.

How Does a Reheat Unit Work?

The process happens in two stages.

Stage one: overcool the air. The system cools incoming air well below your target room temperature. Cold air holds less moisture than warm air, so this step is what pulls the humidity out and condenses it away from the airstream.

Stage two: reheat the air. Once the moisture has been removed, the air gets warmed back up — using a hot gas or electric reheat coil — to a temperature that matches what the room actually needs.

The result is air delivered to your building that’s dry, but not cold. Your building gets the humidity control without the blast of overcooled air that would otherwise come with it.

This two-step approach is effective because standard AC systems only pull moisture out of the air while they’re running to hit a temperature target. Once the space reaches that target, the system shuts off — even if the air is still humid.

The only way around this without a reheat process is to set the thermostat colder than the space needs, just to keep the system running long enough to remove more moisture. That drives up energy costs and can leave the building overcooled without fully solving the humidity problem.

Why Standard Commercial AC Alone Can’t Solve Humidity

Central Mississippi’s air carries more moisture than it used to. The Gulf has warmed over the past several decades, and that extra humidity has moved inland — the kind of muggy air the coast has dealt with for generations is now showing up in Jackson and Meridian.

Reheat units tend to make more sense in buildings where humidity needs to be controlled precisely, room by room or zone by zone, without sacrificing comfort in the process — think medical facilities, labs, or any space with tight environmental requirements.

Improved ventilation and equipment upgrades sometimes address the problem at a smaller scale, particularly in buildings where the humidity issue is tied to a specific area rather than the whole structure.
