Replace Your Air Conditioner If It Fits This List

If your air conditioner is old and worn out, you might not be doing yourself any favors by trying to use it through one more summer. The summer season is extremely stressful for air conditioning systems, considering the demand placed on them on a daily basis. If you put your current air conditioner under that amount of stress for an extended period of time, you may not be too happy about what happens. You don’t want your system to break down on you in the middle of the hottest month of the year, after all. Probably the best thing to do, if your air conditioner is getting close to the end of its life, is to replace it as soon as possible. Consider replacing your air conditioner if it fits the following list:

It’s Costing a Lot to Use

The older an air conditioner gets, the more efficient it’s going to lose to wear and tear. As wear and tear on the system mounts, it will have to operate for longer periods of time in order to cool the home properly. While you may not notice this added operating time at first, you will almost certainly notice the added cost to your monthly bills. If those monthly bills are rising faster than you think they should, it may be that the AC system is in need of replacement.

It’s Breaking Down Frequently

If your air conditioner is breaking down on a regular basis, you should probably consult with a professional about replacing it. By “often” we mean multiple times a year. Air conditioners break down every once in a while, and it usually isn’t a big deal for the overall health of the system—it can be if it happens frequently enough. An air conditioner that is breaking down every few months or so is likely very close to the end of its life. The years of wear and tear are causing the parts in the system to fail in groups, and the issue will only worsen the longer the air conditioner remains in operation. It’s better to just install a new system than to continue replacing the old one piece by piece.

It’s Really Old (For an HVAC System)

Most of the problems that end up leading to air conditioner replacement are the result of old age. An air conditioner tends to last around 10–15 years before it starts to accumulate a range of chronic problems that affect its cost-efficiency. The older your air conditioner gets past that point, the more money it’s going to cost to keep it up and running. The system will quickly become more financial trouble than it’s worth. If your air conditioner is older than 15 years of age, consult with a professional about replacing it as soon as possible.
